What do the grains of sand along the shores of Pawleys Island have in common with ElJay Pretzels? Just like each grain of sand, every pretzel that comes out of our kitchen is one-of-a-kind — handcrafted, carefully baked, and made with pride.

Our recipe began with a simple goal: to recreate a cherished childhood memory. What started as Bob Browner’s personal project quickly became the favorite contribution at neighborhood gatherings. Soon, we were encouraged to share them beyond our own circle — and ElJay Foods was born. We started in a church kitchen, and five years later moved into a kitchen of our own, growing one batch at a time.

We’ve always stayed true to our original recipe — just five simple ingredients. That foundation remains at the heart of everything we make. With our VON Chips, we’ve elevated the experience by adding extra seasoning and a touch of EVOO for a bold, flavorful twist on our classic pretzel.

The name VON holds a special place in our story. When we first opened our kitchen in Pawleys Island, an extraordinary angel came into our lives. She helped care for Caryl’s mother in our home, giving us the freedom to focus on building ElJay Foods. Though Eppie is no longer with us, her spirit and support remain part of our journey. We are forever grateful to VON.
